Who can be hypnotized and benefit from Hypnotherapy?

“Virtually everyone” can be hypnotised. However, it is observed that some are more readily hypnotisable than others and that it will also depend upon one’s willingness to be hypnotised at the time. The level of trance in order to achieve a beneficial outcome, does not relate to the depth of the trance. This means that, even when you feel that you have not been hypnotised, beneficial changes will take place.

Given that, hypnotherapy can be utilised to access a person’s inner potential and that, probably no one is performing at full potential, anyone can benefit from a hypnotherapy session. However, Hypnotherapy addresses not just ‘potential’ but also touches one’s inner resources to trigger beneficial changes. It is the innate healing capacity of one`s own body (the doctor within us) that may be stimulated by Hypnotherapy. Hypnosis addresses anyone who wishes to enhance their quality of life by helping to solve problems, find answers, control emotions, stimulate creativity and learning capacity, in order to achieve and maintain a good physical and psychological balance.

We are naturally concerned that we might “lose control” under hypnosis. Regardless of how deeply you may go under hypnosis and however passive you may appear to be, you remain in full control of the situation. You are fully able to talk if you wish (or not, as the case may be), at any time, you decide, you can come out of this state and remember all that took place. A hypnotised person cannot be ‘made to do’ anything against one’s ethical or moral judgement or religious beliefs.

What is: Hypnotherapy?

The practice of promoting healing or positive change and development using hypnosis is known as hypnotherapy. It is distinctive in that, it attempts to address the client’s subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy aims to re-program patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome. As the body is released from conscious control during the relaxed trance-like state of hypnosis, breathing becomes slower and deeper, the pulse rate drops and the metabolic rate falls. Similar changes along nervous pathways and hormonal channels enable the sensation of pain to become less acute, and the awareness of unpleasant symptoms to be alleviated.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition, but, when in it, the patient is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist’s voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed.

The therapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the patient, the seeds of which become firmly planted to generate lasting and profound transformations. A hypnotic trance is a state of altered consciousness, located between sleep and awareness. We all experiment states of altered consciousness on several occasions, daily e.g. when one is absorbed by a movie or a captivating reading or when we lose the notion of time, performing an absorbing task. All hypnosis is considered self-hypnosis, a normal, natural state in human beings. Hypnosis helps us to access our unconscious mind and work with our inner strengths and resources to foster change and healing.

Hypnotherapist: my role

As a certified Hypnotherapist, I have mastered the science of hypnosis and my role is to assist and gently guide you in a state where your body, your conscious mind, is relaxed and I can awaken your unconscious mind to induce meaningful alternatives to your current concerns, way of thinking, feeling or behaving. I utilize a wide range of techniques such as inductions, direct and/or indirect suggestions, a descriptive language marked by tones of voice, silences, accentuated markings, breaks, metaphors, symbolism and allegories. During a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not ‘made to do’ anything. Hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, and it is all about empowerment.

What to expect during an Hypnotherapy session?

Each session lasts about an hour. On a first consultation, a few minutes are dedicated to opening your confidential file: contact information, social, family, professional and environment history, the reason for consulting. Follows: a brief explanation of hypnotherapy and its opportunities. Next, an informal chat and some questions to ascertain the nature of the issue, identify and clarify the objectives and determine a treatment plan. The Hypnotherapist never establishes a diagnosis; this is an area reserved to the medical corps.

You will be then gently be led and guided into a relaxing state, an hypnotic trance. In this state, while your conscious mind is distracted, the therapist works with your unconscious mind. This means that you will be picturing, as in a daydream, the things which are being suggested and that you will experience associated pleasant feelings. After your first session there is is time left for you to ask questions and discuss any experiences you had while you were in the relaxed hypnotic state.

The next and/or following consultations are generally conducted as follows:

The first 10 to 15 minutes involves a discussion on what has happened since the previous meeting, and then the therapeutic hypnosis session usually lasts between 45 and 50 minutes. Once completed there is a brief review of what has happened. Each additional hypnotic session (if needed) is adjusted depending on your needs, your expectations and your goals.

Hypnotherapy can be particularly effective in the following cases and more:
